Studies on Oxygen Consumption, Anaerobic Glycolysis & Nucleic Acid Contents of Rst Liver, Kidney & Spleen Following Partial Hepatectomy

Abstract
Partial hepatectomy was performed on the rats by means of surgically removing of the median lobe of the liver which is about 1/3 of the total liver weight.
The regenerating capacity of the remnant liver was observed at the interval of 1, 2, 4, 7, 10 and 14 days postoperatively.
The oxygen consumption rates (QOZ), anaerobic glycolysis and nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) contents of the remnant liver and remote organ such as kidney and spleen following the partial hepatectomy were also studied and the results were compared to the control group of the rats where only laparatomy was performed.
Results thus obtained are summarized as follows:
1, The regenerating capacity of the remnant liver following the partial hepatectomy showed an active and rapid growth up to 7th postoperative day. By the 14th day the weight of the remnant 13ver reached close to the initial total liver weight.
2. Comparing to the control value, QOZ of the remnant liver and the kidney were sharply elevated up to 4th andlnd day respectively, and then gradual decline was observed up to 14th day.
The QOZ of the spleen didn¢¥t shvw much difference comparing to the control broup.
3. Tiie anaerobic glycolysis of the remnant liver were markedly elevated up to the 4th day and then ensued gradual decline of the value. After 10th days on, no significant difference betwe~~n the control group was observed. The glycolysis of the kidney and spleen showed elevated curve up to 2nd and 4th day respectively, and then decreased gradually.
4. Contents of RNA in remnant liver, kidney and spleen were increased from the 2nd postoperative day up to 7th day. Among those, liver RNA. contents have increased most significantly,
DtiA contents of liver and kidney were sharply elevated up to the 4th and 2nd day respectively, and then decreased gradually. DNA contents of spleen elevated slightly until 4th dad and then there vas no significant chan;e with control group.
5. With the reselt of the above experiments, regeneration capacity vi remnant liver following partial hepatectvmy and QOZ, glycolysis and nucleic acid contents of each tissue have close relationship.
During the regeneration of rcmnant liver, the tissue oxidation and glycoiysis and nucleic acid contents of kidney showed similar tendency with those of remnant liver, however spleen showed no significant changes.
It seems that contents of DNA and regenerat-ion caF~acity of remnant liver have direct relationship. The changes of DNA contents of each tissue Have similar tendency with QOZ and glycolysis. QOz and glycolysis get the influence of the change of the tissue DNA contents.
